JEE Mains 2026 Preparation Tips & Strategy

Expert preparation strategies, best books, month-wise study plan and subject-wise tips to help you score high in JEE Mains 2026.

Core Preparation Strategies

NCERT First

Read and understand all NCERT chapters before any reference book. 40–50% of questions are directly NCERT-based.

Practice Daily

Solve minimum 50–80 problems daily across subjects. Consistency is more powerful than intensity.

Time Management

In the exam, attempt known questions first. Don't spend more than 3 minutes on any one MCQ.

Mock Tests

Attempt full 3-hour mocks from Month 8 onwards. Analyze every mistake — that's how you improve.

12-Month Study Plan

Ideal for students starting preparation 1 year before the exam.

Months 1–4

Foundation Building

Phase 1

  • Complete NCERT for all 3 subjects
  • Understand basic concepts and formulae
  • Solve NCERT exercises fully
  • Make formula sheets subject-wise
  • Cover Class 11 syllabus thoroughly
Months 5–8

Concept Mastery

Phase 2

  • Complete Class 12 syllabus
  • Reference books for difficult topics
  • Start solving previous year papers
  • Topic-wise mock tests
  • Identify and work on weak areas
Months 9–11

Intensive Practice

Phase 3

  • 10+ full mock tests (session-format)
  • Analyse mistakes after each test
  • Focus revision on high-weightage topics
  • Numerical Value Questions practice
  • Time management drills
Month 12

Revision & Polish

Phase 4

  • Revise formula sheets daily
  • 5-year previous papers in timed conditions
  • No new topics — consolidate existing
  • Focus on accuracy over speed
  • Rest 2 days before exam

Subject-wise Preparation Tips

Physics Tips

  • Master Mechanics first — it forms 25% of Physics questions
  • Draw free body diagrams for every mechanics problem
  • Understand derivations — don't just memorize results
  • Practice dimensional analysis for formula verification
  • Electromagnetics and Modern Physics are consistently high-scoring
  • H.C. Verma exercises are gold — solve all of them

🧪 Chemistry Tips

  • NCERT is king for Chemistry — most questions are directly from it
  • Organic mechanisms should be understood, not memorized
  • Mole concept and stoichiometry are foundational for Physical Chemistry
  • Make a reaction chart for Organic named reactions
  • Periodic trends, d-block and coordination compounds are high-yield in Inorganic
  • Solve Mole concept problems daily to build speed

📐 Mathematics Tips

  • Calculus carries 30–35% — master differentiation and integration
  • Solve at least 20 problems per topic during study
  • For Coordinate Geometry, use standard equations and don't memorize shortcuts
  • Matrices and Determinants are easy marks — don't miss them
  • Practice Probability and Statistics — they're often asked
  • Speed matters: aim to solve MCQs in 2–3 min each

✅ Do's

  • Follow a fixed daily schedule
  • Practice numerical value questions (no negative marking)
  • Revise every topic within 48 hours of studying
  • Sleep 7–8 hours — rest is part of preparation
  • Join a test series from Month 8
  • Maintain a mistake journal
  • Attempt both sessions for best score

❌ Don'ts

  • Don't skip NCERT for any subject
  • Don't guess MCQs randomly (−1 penalty)
  • Don't study 15+ hours/day — quality over quantity
  • Don't neglect weaker subjects
  • Don't start new books 2 months before exam
  • Don't miss mock test analysis sessions
  • Don't compare your progress with others
